Guide to BMW Warning Lights: What Do They Mean?

Although BMW is known for producing exceptional quality vehicles, it is possible that your 3 Series or X5 may require an unexpected visit to a service center. If you notice that warning light on your BMW dashboard has become illuminated, it may require an inspection by a technician. Bob Smith BMW has the details on what your BMW dashboard warning lights mean.

BMW Dash Warning Lights: Meaning

Because your BMW is equipped with numerous advanced systems, you will notice that there is a wide array of BMW warning light symbols that could pop up on your dashboard. Some of these signal that your BMW needs immediate service, while others are simple fixes you might even do yourself. Knowing the meaning of your BMW dash warning lights can help you decipher whether your vehicle needs to be brought to a BMW service center for an evaluation.

  • Oil Can: This symbol lets you know that your vehicle is in need of an oil change. We will quickly change the oil in your BMW and check that your vehicle’s oil and lubrication system is doing its job.
  • Light Bulb: When this icon is illuminated, it is to notify you that one or more external lights are out or experiencing an issue. If the light remains on even after you’ve addressed the problem, you may need to bring your vehicle by our service center.
  • Empty or Low Fuel: This dashboard light is a warning that you have approximately 30 miles before your vehicle runs out of fuel. Stop by your Woodland Hills gas station for a fill-up. Keep in mind that driving too long with this light on could damage your fuel system.
  • Tire Pressure Monitor: If this light is triggered itmeans that one or more of your tires is underinflated. A yellow light means the tire pressure is down by about 10%, while a red light means the tire has deflated rapidly.
  • Dynamic Stability Control: If this light is on, you don’t need to worry. All that it means is that the traction control system has been engaged. Read more about it in your owner’s manual
  • Service Vehicle: When this light is yellow, it means your BMW will be due for service soon. When your BMW is overdue for service, the light will change from yellow to red.
  • Thermometer: This symbol lets you know that your engine is too hot and that it could potentially overheat. If your engine overheats, it is not only damaging to your vehicle, but it is dangerous as well. If you aren’t near a BMW service center, we recommend stopping your vehicle to let your engine cool down and then visiting us as soon as possible.
  • Engine: When this warning light flashes or stays on, you should bring your vehicle in for service as soon as possible
